Maria Gonzalez
Maria Elena Gonzalez (July 22, 1985 – November 5, 2021) was a dedicated community organizer and immigrant rights advocate from Phoenix, Arizona. Born to Mexican immigrant parents, Maria understood firsthand the challenges faced by immigrant families.
After earning her law degree from Arizona State University, Maria devoted her career to providing legal assistance to immigrants and refugees. She founded the “Pathways to Citizenship” program, which has helped hundreds of families navigate the complex immigration system.
Maria was also an accomplished poet, publishing a collection titled “Borders of the Heart” that explored themes of identity, belonging, and justice. Her writing has been included in several anthologies of Latinx literature.
Maria is remembered for her fierce advocacy, compassionate heart, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Legacy
Maria’s work continues through the Maria Gonzalez Legal Aid Fund, which provides pro bono legal services to immigrant families. Her poetry is now taught in several university courses on contemporary Latinx literature, ensuring her voice continues to inspire future generations.
