James Washington
James “Jimmy” Washington (September 3, 1968 – January 12, 2022) was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. A talented musician and community activist, Jimmy dedicated his life to mentoring youth through music programs in underserved neighborhoods.
After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Music Education, Jimmy returned to Detroit to teach at his former high school. He founded the “Rhythm of Hope” program, which provided free instruments and lessons to children who couldn’t afford them.
Jimmy’s jazz quartet performed regularly at local venues, and he released three independent albums during his lifetime. His music was known for blending traditional jazz with contemporary urban sounds, creating what he called “street jazz.”
Jimmy passed away after a brief battle with cancer. His positive outlook and dedication to uplifting others remained strong until the end.
Legacy
Jimmy’s legacy lives on through the Rhythm of Hope Foundation, which continues to provide musical education to youth in Detroit. His former students have established an annual concert series that showcases young talent and raises funds for music programs in public schools.
