About Vice President Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris is a trailblazing leader who has broken barriers throughout her career. Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, Harris is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India. She attended Howard University, where she earned a degree in political science and economics, before going on to study law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office before being elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003.

Harris made history in 2010 when she was elected as the Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to hold the position. During her tenure, she focused on issues such as criminal justice reform, protecting consumers, and advocating for the rights of undocumented immigrants. In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, becoming only the second African American woman and the first South Asian American woman to serve in the Senate.
