Black America Raises the Bar on Black Businesses – But Is It Fair?

In the world of business and technology, every company starts somewhere. Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok all had humble beginnings, evolving over years into the giants they are today. But when it comes to Black-owned businesses, especially in tech, the expectations are often unrealistically high from day one.

Unfair Standards for Black Businesses

When a Black entrepreneur launches a business, many in the community expect it to immediately compete with billion-dollar companies. They demand perfection, flawless execution, and massive success—without giving the business the same time and patience that mainstream platforms received.

Think about it: how many features on Facebook or Twitter do you still not fully understand? How often do major platforms release updates to fix issues? These companies were not perfect at launch, and they are still evolving. So why do we expect Black businesses to be different?

Supporting Growth Instead of Criticizing

Instead of holding Black businesses to impossible standards, we should:

  • Give them time – Success doesn’t happen overnight. Every platform needs time to grow, improve, and adjust to its users’ needs.
  • Offer constructive feedback – Instead of tearing down Black-owned businesses, help them refine their products and services.
  • Promote and engage – Share, support, and encourage others to use Black-owned platforms. Growth comes through community adoption.
  • Be patient – Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were the tech giants we use daily. Black businesses deserve the same chance to evolve.

The Same “You Have to Start Somewhere” Applies to Us Too

Raising the bar is a good thing—it pushes businesses to be their best. But when we set unrealistic expectations for Black entrepreneurs, we’re doing more harm than good.

If we truly want to see Black businesses succeed, we must support, uplift, and allow them the space to grow—just like every other major platform had.

Let’s build together instead of tearing each other down.
